Melissa Fleming is Head of Communications and Chief Spokesperson for the United High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and recently served as Senior Advisor for UN Secretary-General, António Guterres. She travels to war zones and refugee camps to give voice, drive empathy and build support for the millions of people forcibly displaced from their homes. To garner support for a humanitarian cause, she believes communications must not only inform but also generate empathy and stir action . She leads global media outreach and campaigns to generate news coverage, and operates a multi-media news and feature service to distribute and place refugee stories. A leader in social media engagement, she encourages front-line staff to bear witness through Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
